Rear Handle Chainsaws must be operated with two hands, the rear and front handles are spaced sufficiently apart so that you can operate it while still maintaining a solid grip on the rear handle.
Top Handle Chainsaws are specifically designed for working at heights, when for safety reasons you cannot have both hands on the chainsaw. The rear handle and operating controls are located on the top of the saw so that the saw is well balanced, allowing you to operate it with one hand when necessary. You can use this two-handed and it is recommended, except when working at a height, tree lopping for example.
